me in the kitchen
debbie in the kitchen
all the rooms were named after animals and we were in the fish room, this bag was on the wall, we realy wanted to take it on a night out, lol
debbie hanging out in the livingroom, the laptops are out in the hope that the internet fairies turned up
with it being sooo rainy we had to do things that involved being inside, like visiting museums, this kodiak bear is in the native museum, it was killed in 1982 and features in the film "the grizzly man" it was HUGE!!!
some rather interesting sunglasses
they were in this museum, which is housed in the oldest building in kodiak
the best thing we did to get out of the rain was to go to the kodiak island brewing co and try all there beers (they let u do it for free!!) debbies fake id is still working a treat :) we then bought 2 growlers (big bottles of beer) of 2 diferent beers and headed home to get drunk, eh i mean have a quiet drink, they were good, so good infact that we went back the next day and got the growlers filled up of another 2 types of beer
with no internet we turned our attentions to more creative pastimes and made debbie a new necklace with some beads i had and some she bought that day, i also got some new beads for the dreads
i bought a whale tail charm in homer, id wanted one for ages and thought if im going to get one anywhere it has to be alaska. goes quite well with the ole jesus fish i thought
some general pics from kodiak, it was so rainy and foggy we didnt realise that it was actualy surrounded by snow capped mountains!!
the holy resurrection church
st hermans orthodox seminary, can you spot the monk by the tree on the left, i think he was running away from my camera!
we went on a bit of a walk over the bridge, the guide book said we'd see sea lions over there, but no luck we didnt spot any! jst more bald eagles which are starting to get a bit boring! lol
one of the many eagles
the harbour at the other side of the bridge
at the harbour there was 3 phone boxes, none of which actualy had any phones in them!
we went on a bit of a walk in the woods as i said it was pretty rainy
this is the beach where we seen the bear paw sticking out of a cave, debbie ran away in fear while i got the binoliars our and tried to detemine if it was indeed a bear paw, then got scared and ran away
some signs from around kodiak, basicaly telling u to not encourage bears and head for high ground when a sunami hits, oh and wear your seatbelt, there very adamant on that in alaska
the fog and rain finaly cleared and we seen the surrounding mountains and seen that kodiak was actualy realy pretty, so we hired a car and headed out of town in persuit of some bears
the car, i felt a little inadequate with this tiny car next to everyone elses big pick up trucks but i was so glad it was small and drivable
some pics from our road trip, which lasted about 36miles south of kodiak before running out of road
after a while the road went from proper road to gravel road, this was the gravel road
one of the beaches on our trip
debbie found some walrus teeth (i think they might have been some shells worn by the sea but dont tell her, shhhh)
me geting to near the sea!!
me behind the wheel, very serious business
some general pics
there are loads of bunkers all over kodiak from before WW2, the bunkers in the background
debbie still checking for whales
after checking out all the south had to offer we headed north for a walk through the woods to a lovely little beach, still no sign of any bears. there were a lot of furry branched trees around though
the beach
there was also a lake
another bunker from the war days
the best thing we found in the woods was this tiny little squirrel, it didnt even flintch when we got close up in its grill, well apart from when debbie put the macro setting on the camera and practicaly touched it she was that close, then it looked disgusted and took of
getting closer
ok to close, get outa my grill
so that was kodiak, we'r now in whittier staying in a place the guide book describes as "the multi purpose venue is pretty squalid but, as a last resort it'l do" dont know what there talking about, its pretty nice and has tv!! although from the outside it looks pretty bad, we'l update with pics tomoro, im all blogged out
